AWARENESS ABOUT IMMUNISATION

COMPILED BY-  VINEETA KHATIK,   PRACHI KORI, PRIYAMVADA KURVETI
                                 SAPNA RAJA (PRE-FINAL YEAR 2002-2003)

ABSTRACT

IMMUNISATION is boon for humanity. It is the sole equipment to fight against many infectious diseases. In spite of best possible efforts put up by government & various Non-government organizations, still there is low immunization coverage in our country; because of illiteracy, ignorance & myths prevailing among the people; especially those living in rural interiors & urban slums.
So our group decided to share our knowledge regarding immunization with such people & make them aware. For this purpose, we formulated a protocol under the guidance of staff of Department of PSM & team of PSBH members from Trivandrum in the workshop held in our college in February 2001.
The basic objective of ours is to increase awareness about immunization by 50% among selected 20 parents residing at Balsagar, Jabalpur having children under 2 years of age by health education program of 2 hours in one & a half month.
We visited Balsagar & screened 55 families. Out of those, we identified 20 parents having children under 2 years of age & enlisted their names along with their children. Then with the help of pre-designed questionnaire having 25 questions in Y\N format, these parents were tested before health education. Simultaneously, we tabulated the immunization status of their children by checking entries in the immunization cards. After that we conducted the Health Education Session of 15 min/couple.
On 45th day from the day on which health education session was held, we assessed those 20 parents again with the same questionnaire; & also re-checked the immunization cards to see the improvement in the immunization status of their children, which was found to be about 76.4%. But as per assessment done by questionnaire method it was only 43.1%(males 45%, females 41.2%).

TRAINING OF VOLUNTEER STUDENTS ON
CASUALTY EVACUATION, EARLY RESUSCITATION
AND FIRST AID PROVISION

ABSTRACT
Natural hazards in India have never been properly understood in terms of support facilities planning and implementation and this is evident very clearly from the earthquake in Gujarat (26 Jan. 2001).  This raised serious questions about the state of preparedness against earthquake in one of the most earthquake prone regions in the world.  Still, the deficiencies of Rescue and Relief  have been ignored to notorious degree by the politicians and bureaucrats.
If we can increase the availability of skilled emergency rescue personnel in immediate post disaster scenario, we can definitely decrease the death toll in a disaster through a significant degree because maximum deaths in a disaster occur in the immediate 2 or 3 hours of an earthquake or any mechanical disaster and treatment reaches about 4 - 5 hours after the disaster strikes.
The whole theme of my Project revolves around the axis of PREPAREDNESS i.e. pre-arranged emergency measures which are to be taken to minimise the loss of life following the onset of a disaster particularly earthquakes in the context of Jabalpur and minimising the reaction time which is premium.
To increase the availability of skilled personnel who can provide emergency first aid to disaster or accident victims, so as to sustain the survivors until they get definite treatment , I formed a group of 100 young volunteers and trained them in different aspects of Casualty Evacuation, Early Resuscitation, First Aid Provision and Transportation to a safe place.
Evaluation of training was done by short answer questionnaire provided at pre-training and post training instants and result were encouraging and somewhat upto my target.  Lot more is required to be done.  Here my greatest achievement was the change in attitude of young students and senior doctors. Non-medical students are also being included in the training programme and lets hope that we can take out maximum benefit out of this endeavour.

A study to detect refractive errors among school children and provide spectacles for correction of refractive errors.

PROJECT   BY -
Ankur Agrawal,Abhinav Kumar,Amit K. Chopra ,Nitin Jain

ABSTRACT:

Basically our study was to screen out 400 school children for refractive errors and to correct them by providing spectacles with the help of an NGO.  We found out the prevalence of refractive errors (significant ones, i.e. Vision worse than 6 / 9) was 10.15 % among the 276 students that were screened.

We provided Spectacles free of cost to 28 students having significant R.E. and provided health education to improve their knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) regarding eye care.

To find out the improvement in the condition of the students, we compared their scores with the help of Pre & Post Intervention Questionnaires which increased from 3.4 /10 on an average to 7.9 / 10 which is an increase of 45 %.

RESEARCH QUESTION:Will distribution of ron and Folic Acid tablets to adolescent girls of 12-14 years age of Shakiya Purva Madhyamic Shaala Medical college, Jabalpur having Hb level 12 gm% or less for 8 weeks, 2 tabs per day will increase Hb level by atleast 1 gm%?

METHODS: The investigation included clinical examination and observation of study subjects and measurement of Hb level. The levels of participating subjects were measured again after 8 weeks of IFA supplementation.

RESULTS: 25 adolescent girls were identified as anemic. They were given daily IFA supplementation [2 tabs large were administered daily] along with nutritional education for Iron rich diet every week. An increase of 2.62gm% (mean) of Hb was found at the end of 8 weeks intervention period.

CONCLUSION: This study has demonstrated that anemia among girls of the school under study is high as in other parts of the country. Thus the project highlights the importance of inclusion of IFA supplementation in the various planning and interventions under taking by the government.
